THE NEXT few days flew by, and Rino could admit he might have misjudged Scott. He was quite personable once he dropped the jealous baby routine. Work was starting to feel more comfortable as well, and by the end of the week, Rino was actually happy to be working in a clearly gay-friendly practice. After the condemning atmosphere of the seminary, it was refreshing to be himself for a change. Many of their patients were gays and lesbians who assumed he was a member of their team. He didn’t deny it when they asked and enjoyed the friendly banter when they offered to hook him up with friends and relatives.

It had been three days since the apology from Scott. At this morning’s huddle, Scott shared the reason he’d been a total bitch the last week and went on to announce that he’d passed his physical with flying colors. He’d been given a clean bill of health after the big scare he’d received from the insurance company. Everyone took turns in hugging him, and when Rino got to the head of the line, he stuck his hand out for a shake, not really expecting Scott to embrace him, considering their rocky start, but Scott pulled him close and hugged him.

“I’m really sorry for being such a diva,” he whispered.

“No worries, Doc. I totally get it.”

“You need to do me a big favor,” Robin butted in.

“What do you need?” Rino asked.

“The urologist who saw Scott needs a prophy, and I told him to stop by today at three. I thought I had an opening, but it’s gone.”

“I have one.”

“I know. Would you mind seeing him?”

“It’ll be my pleasure. What’s his name?”

“Ethan Marshall.”

“Really?”

“Why?”

“I knew someone by that name a long time ago. He was also a doctor.”

“Maybe he’s the same guy,” Robin suggested.

Rino smiled. “That would be miraculous.”

“We’ve had our fair share of miracles lately,” Robin said, suddenly serious. “Maybe you’re due as well.”

Rino didn’t give the conversation another thought until he looked at the schedule on the computer with a small yellow dot on Ethan Marshall’s name announcing his arrival. He checked his room one last time to make sure everything was in order and went out to welcome his patient. It was standard practice in their office for the doctor or hygienist to greet the patient in the reception area and then walk them back to the operatory.

When he announced Ethan’s name, the guy who stood and looked at him in surprise was the manager of Heaven’s Gate. He smiled at Rino and stretched out his hand. “It’s been a long time.”

Rino stared wide-eyed, mentally stripping the face of the full beard and all the years that had separated them, but in the end, he recognized the kindness in the eyes, which hadn’t changed at all.

“Dr. Ethan,” he said softly. “Welcome.”
